Vito d’Asio

VITO D'ASIO

In friulian "Vît".

It is a so-called dispersed municipality as the municipal seat is not located in the namesake locality but in the hamlet of Anduins. The municipality occupies a vast territory along the valley of the Arzino stream, rich in woods and numerous watercourses, largely untouched by humans.

The first part of the toponym derives from the Latin vicus “village”, from which the Friulian Vît, which was Italianized into Vito. The second part is a collective name that once identified the territory including the villages of Vito, Anduins, and Clauzetto; attested since 1289 as Asium of unknown origin.

At the end of the 19th century, the history of Vito d’Asio was linked to Count Giacomo Ceconi, born and raised in the hamlet of Pielungo, where the family villa, the so-called Ceconi Castle, stands. The count provided numerous public works to enhance his hometown; among the most important are the Church of St. Anthony in Pielungo and the Queen Margherita Road.
