The 41st edition is scheduled from 20 June to 22 July with a long-awaited preview at the billboard scheduled for Saturday 16 March at the Miotto Theater in Spilimbergo with the debut concert of the new tour of the historic band le Orme.
Among the guests of this edition, along with international names and the ones of the young artists who were finalists in the “folkest award – Alberto Cesa”, also the duo Shapiro Vandelli the “Love and Peace Live Tour” (Udine Castle, on July 9th) and the timeless PFM (in Koper on July 20th) committed to the “TVB- The Very Best Tour”. To suggell the 2019 edition on July 22th at Udine Castle a true international star, the canadian singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt. More than sixty appointments for the 2019 edition, with more than 20 friulian municipalities involved, including Udine, Spilimbergo, Gorizia, Duino, until it touches also the neighbouring Slovenia with the city of Capodistria.
The artists who, like every uninterrupted summer since 1979, will animate the numerous stages of Folkest, always signed by the artistic direction of Andrea Del Favero, come from all over the world. This year, from June 20th to July 22nd, they will perform a series of concerts, meetings and editorial presentations in more than twenty municipalities, including Udine, Spilimbergo, Gorizia, Duino, but also Koper in neighbouring Slovenia.
As usual, the protagonists of the main festival will be very different artists. Festival that explores the music and cultures of the world: a multicolored festival designed to give voice to the cultural roots of any part of the globe, realized with the contribution of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the fundamental support of the Friuli Foundation, which is flanked by the collaboration of the municipalities involved.
The 2019 season of Folkest will open with a long-awaited preview scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at 21:00 when on the stage of the Theater Miotto in Spilimbergo will rise the legendary progressive rock band of the sixties Le Orme in an event organized with the City of Spilimbergo and Folkgionale. It is a real “gem” that will bring to the city of Friuli the absolute exclusive preview for the Northeast of the new tour of the band with the presentation of the new album “On the wings of a dream”.
Composed of 11 tracks, the new album by Sony Music – Legacy Recordings will be released on March 15, just one day before the debut concert in Spilimbergo. “On the wings of a dream” is an exciting musical journey through some of the most beautiful songs of the historical band, revisited and enriched by important collaborations, between whose one with Francesca Michielin (voice in “Baby Game”), the former King Crimson David Cross (who plays the violin in six tracks), and the Finnish tenor Eero Lasorla. Inside the album, there are also two unreleased tracks: “La danza di primavera” and “Another Heaven”. Recorded in the Venetian hills of Bassano Del Grappa, this new record is born from the idea of musically celebrating Michi Dei Rossi, historical drummer of Le Orme, which is celebrating its 70th birthday this year and has selected the most popular songs. representative of a band that in more than 50 years of artistic career has made the history of the Italian progressive rock. That of Saturday, March 16 in Spilimbergo is an opportunity really unique for the old fans to listen again to the characteristic sound of Le Orme and enjoy it for the first time for the youngest people who have never heard them live.
An important part of the festival’s summer programme is represented by the exhibition in Spilimbergo in July (5, 7 and 8 July) of the best groups that participate annually in the Folkest Award-Alberto Cesa: a contest that selects new talents able to express with their musical proposal the link between one or more of the cultural roots of any part of the world or with the songwriter. The groups, evaluated by a selected jury at national level, will contend at the festival also a Prize assigned by the New Imaie for the realisation of a tour. The Folkest Award, which proposes the cultural project of the Friulian festival in various regions of Italy, exporting the Folkest model outside the region, was held this year in Arezzo, Loano (SV), Udine, San Pietro in Cariano (VR), Cervasca (CN), Coreno Ausonio (FR) and Succivo (CE). New for this edition of the Award is that the first three groups selected in Spilimbergo will perform in the second evening of July 7 in a song in the friulian language. The final is scheduled for July 8 with the conduction of the historic voice of Radio Rai Gianmaurizio Foderaro: as usual, the evening will be entirely filmed by a TV crew from the Rai headquarters in Friuli Venezia Giulia who will then re-propose the entire evening to the television audience.
The groups selected for the final are the Roman Archive Valley, the folk-swing group of Monsieur de Rien, the singer-songwriter Alessandro Lepore, the group formed by musicians from different countries of the world Ensemble du Sud, the women band Madamè, the trio that explores the Neapolitan repertoire from 500/600 until today Suonno d’ajere and the quartet with a passion for traditional music Brigan.
In addition to young talents and numerous international artists, this year we will be able to greet in Folkest some of the most long-lived and timeless artists of the home panorama, or that have made Italy their privileged stage, which is the duo Shapiro-Vandelli: the two artists “found themselves”, after a life of rivalry, distances, marked differences in character, education and lifestyles, but also in mutual respect, and a great love of music. Shel Shapiro and Maurizio Vandelli will perform at the Udine Castle on Tuesday, July 9 in their “Peace and Love live tour” singing each other’s songs and performing in pairs on some timeless hits.
Also in July, this time in Piazza Carpaccio in Koper on Saturday 20th, it will once again be the turn of a historical name in our music: PFM – Premiata Forneria Marconi will be on stage at Folkest 2019 for a stop on TVB-The Very Best TOUR – organized with the Italian Community and the Aias Koper – which collects the greatest successes of their vast repertoire. The new tour starts after the intense international tour that has touched Japan and the Americas via the United Kingdom and the “Cruise to the edge”, the largest Prog Rock festival in the world where the band was invited for the third time, the only Italian presence on stage that also hosted the YES.
To seal this edition will be a truly exceptional presence: with a new album of unreleased songs released this year, entitled Lost Souls (Quinlan Road, 2018), back in Italy the world-famous Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, music icon Celtic, Loreena McKennitt, with a six date summer tour across our peninsula.
In addition to Florence, Milan, Rome, Macerata and Bari, Monday, July 22 will be for the Folkest Festival at the Udine Castle.
About ten years after the release of her latest album of unreleased songs, Loreena McKennitt came back in May of this year with a new job and is ready to present it around Europe, with a total of 25 concerts across ten countries including Spain, Germany and, indeed, Italy. The singer-songwriter has Irish and Scottish origins and these are the ones that have influenced her music, which is inspired by the Celtic popular songs to which she adds an international touch, with a surprising result and appreciated all over the world. The artist has ground important figures: 14 million albums sold with gold, platinum and multiplatinum discs. Nominated twice for Grammy Awards, won two Juno and the Billboard International Lifetime Achievement Award. On stage the singer-songwriter will be accompanied by the musicians Brian Hughes (guitar, oud and bouzouki Celtic), Caroline Lavelle (cello), Hugh Marsh (violin), Dudley Philips (double bass) and Robert Brian (drums).
